Françoise Gilot was born on November 26, 1921, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. She died on June 6, 2023, in New York City, New York.
She began studying art as a child under the tutelage of her mother Madeleine Renoult Gilot, who was an artist. Françoise took art classes at the Sorbonne in Paris and earned degrees from the University of Cambridge in England, and the British Institute in Paris, France. She had two children with Pablo Picasso, Claude in 1947, and Paloma in 1949.
In recognition of Françoise Gilot’s art, the French government bestowed upon her the highest honors: In 1990, she was appointed a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, and in 2010, she was appointed an Officer of the Légion d’honneur.
