Pierre H. Matisse was born on February 1, 1928, in Paris, France. His given name was Rene Pierre Louis Henri Matisse.
He died on June 27, 2019, in Ormond Beach, Florida.
Pierre H. Matisse was the grandson of the famous artist Henri Matisse. Pierre’s father was sculptor, Jean Gérard Matisse, who was the second child of the famous artist Henri Matisse. Pierre was named after his uncle, who was the youngest child of Henri Matisse. Pierre’s mother was Louise Milhau Matisse, she was a painter and a ceramist. It was under the tutelage of his mother that Pierre began his studies in art, specifically pertaining to color theory. Seldom did his grandfather, Henri, teach his grandson Pierre about art. Once, when Pierre was a young boy, his grandfather agreed to give Pierre a lesson about colors. The lesson consisted of Henri looking at Pierre’s overflowing paint box and choosing four tubes of paint: French ultramarine blue, chrome yellow, vermillion, and white. “I’m confiscating this box.” said the grandfather, “Now, you go paint with those four colors. Furthermore, I forbid you ever to buy anything else than those four colors.” Pierre said that simple lesson greatly improved his art.
In the 1960s, Pierre H. Matisse immigrated to the United States and settled in Florida. He was an artist, art educator, author, and public speaker. He lived in Ormond Beach, Florida with his wife and children. |
